Bug fixes for PDF creation and a new Format HTML option

The latest update squashes a couple of bugs that affected PDF creation and adds a handy Format HTML option tucked into the Webpage settings. It is a small but useful tweak that keeps the local copy much cleaner.

Choose only the file types you need in settings

  1. Set your file types. Open Settings and click the File Types tab. You can grab absolutely everything, or tick only the boxes you need—perfect if you just want images and PDFs without all the stylesheets.
  2. Grab a simple page first. Paste a basic URL into the address field and hit the download button. Watch the log pop up to see exactly what comes across. You can open the log any time from the toolbar.
  3. Pull down an embedded video. The Pro edition can fetch YouTube and Vimeo clips. Just enter the page URL as normal; the app spots the video and saves a local copy along with the rest of the page.
  4. Peek at the local structure. Once the download finishes, right-click the entry and choose “Reveal in Finder.” You will see the full directory tree mirrored from the site—pages, images, PDFs and all.

If a site blocks you, you can switch off the robots.txt exclusion in the settings. That lets you mirror pages that normally turn away automated crawlers.

Link depth set too high pulls in unwanted pages

The biggest one is leaving the link depth set too high. The default setting can pull in sideblogs, archives and tag pages you never wanted, turning a quick grab into a half-hour download. Set a shallow depth in the Limits tab for your first run—two or three levels usually catches a whole article plus its images without wandering off into unrelated sections.

Another common slip is forgetting to check the minimum file size setting. Leave it at zero and you can end up with hundreds of tiny tracking pixels and blank spacer images cluttering the folder. Bumping the minimum to 1 KB filters out most of that noise.

New users also tend to download during peak hours, then wonder why a site returns half its pages as errors. Many shared hosts throttle aggressive requests. Try running a pull mid-morning or late at night; you will see far fewer timeouts in the log.

A real-world example

I know a PhD student who used sitesucker pro to grab an entire set of online exhibition catalogues from a museum’s research portal. The site had no PDF downloads—just page after page of high-resolution scans behind a clunky JavaScript viewer. He pointed SiteSucker Pro at the root URL, set the file types to images only, and let it run overnight. By morning he had a clean folder of 600 TIFF files with the original directory structure intact, ready to annotate offline. No clicking through galleries one image at a time.

Designers and developers studying competitor site structure

Two groups come back to sitesucker mac download again and again. First, designers and front-end developers who need to study how a competitor’s site is built—CSS, asset paths, the works. The local mirror gives them a static snapshot they can pick apart without worrying about the live site changing mid-review.

Second, archivists and researchers who cannot rely on a URL still being there next year. Council reports, campaign sites, small journal archives—things that vanish when funding runs out. The app preserves the folder layout exactly, so a citation to a path like /reports/2023/transport.pdf still makes sense when you are looking at the local copy. If you work with time-sensitive web material, sitesucker pro mac is one of those tools you install once and reach for every few weeks.
