CATO: Buttered Cat 1.3.922 — Mac version
The Anti-Gravity Toast mechanic is what makes it tick. You swap between controlling the cat and the buttered slice stuck to its back, each with different physics. It’s a puzzle platformer with small action bits — boss fights and hidden rooms keep the 140+ main levels from feeling samey. Over 60 side levels and thirty-odd cat-and-toast skins pad out the full version.
Silent fans on an M1 Air during Sequoia
On a MacBook Air (M1, 2020) running Sequoia, it’s smooth. The art style isn’t demanding, so you won’t hear the fans. Controls are tight: keyboard works fine, though a controller feels more natural for the few timing-heavy jumps. It’s Team Woll’s first release, and the English, Traditional Chinese and Japanese localisation is tidy.
Puzzles that force one half to fail
If you like puzzles that ask you to think two moves ahead — literally, with two bodies — you’ll get on. The toast slides, the cat clings. Solving a room often means letting one half fail so the other can succeed. It’s gentle chaos, not twitchy platforming.
Running a repair-café game corner with it
I set up CATO on an old 2015 iMac that usually just plays music while volunteers fix toasters and laptops. Kids waiting with parents grab the controller and work through a few levels together. The two-character swap means they argue less — one calls out cat moves, the other handles the toast. Twenty minutes later someone’s beaten a mini-game and the queue’s forgotten. It’s the right sort of low-stakes chaos for a busy workshop corner.
A five-level session, step by step
You open the app from Launchpad and land on a world map with five themed areas. Pick one, and the first puzzle loads.
- Survey the room. The cat sticks to walls; the toast skids on ice. Spot the exit, then work backwards — which platform needs the toast’s slide, where does the cat need to cling.
- Move the cat into position. Keyboard arrows or left stick. Get it onto a high ledge the toast can’t reach alone.
- Swap to the toast. One tap of the swap key. Now you’re butter-side-down, sliding towards a button. The cat stays frozen mid-cling.
- Trigger the door. Toast hits the pressure plate. The exit opens. Swap back, jump the cat through. Level cleared in under ninety seconds.
- Deal with a boss. Every world ends with one. The cat dodges, the toast blocks projectiles. It’s pattern-based — die twice, learn the rhythm, finish on the third go.
Between levels you might stumble on a hidden room behind a false wall. Tap the direction key and you’re in a bonus puzzle, no loading screen. A search for cato buttered cat mac torrent will turn up copies floating around, but the disk image install is dead simple either way — drag, drop, play.
- macOS Sequoia or newer (likely runs fine on older versions, but that’s what was tested)
- Works on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs
- No activation needed — just drag and launch
