Three of you spawn on a grassy plain with nothing in your pockets. One chops trees, one gathers berries, one scouts for flint. Night falls and the darkness starts biting. You huddle round a campfire, cook what you found, and plan the next day. That's the whole loop: survive together on a shared map.

Co-op survival and team base-building

  • Co-op survival with friends on one shared map
  • Short sessions that turn into long ones fast
  • Players who like planning, gathering and building as a team

Standalone expansion, runs on an M4 Mac mini

  • Standalone multiplayer expansion to Don't Starve
  • Interface in English and Simplified Chinese
  • Tested on macOS Tahoe with a 2024 Mac mini M4

Blank server list? Toggle Wi‑Fi off and on

Sometimes the server list stays blank when you fire up the game. It's almost always a quick fix: quit the game, open System Settings, go to Network, and toggle Wi‑Fi off and on again. Launch Don't Starve Together and the list should populate. If not, give the Mac a restart.

Another one crops up with the firewall. macOS might block the game before it even tries to connect. Head to System Settings → Network → Firewall → Options and check that Don't Starve Together has a green tick next to it. No tick? Click the plus, find the app in Applications, and add it manually.

Graphics glitches on M‑series Macs aren't unheard of. Flickering shadows or black patches on the ground usually come from Metal rendering falling over. In the game's settings, switch the renderer to OpenGL instead. It's a little less snappy but rock solid. You'll find the toggle under Options → Graphics before you load a save.

If the game crashes right after the Klei logo, try deleting the settings file. You won't lose saves. Head to ~/Documents/Klei/DoNotStarveTogether/ and move settings.ini to the desktop. The game makes a fresh one on next launch. Nine times out of ten that sorts it.

Smoother fights when five players mob a Deerclops

Build 747465 brought quieter things than a big headline feature. The team at Klei tightened netcode in a way you feel more than you see. Rubber-banding when five players fight a Deerclops is rarer now. Items dropped on the ground snap into your hand with less of that annoying half-second lag that used to get people killed.

Apple Silicon Macs got a bit more attention too. The build runs native on ARM without Rosetta, so fans spin up less and battery drain stays reasonable on a MacBook. The game always worked on M‑series machines, but this version smoothed out the frame pacing, which matters more in a survival game than you'd think — a stutter while kiting a hound can end a long run fast.

Behind the scenes, the user interface for server setup got a quiet tidy. The tick boxes for caves and mods are laid out in a less confusing order. Small change, but for anyone who hosts a regular world with a few mates, setting up a fresh server from the Host Game screen feels less like filling out a form.

You don't need the original Don't Starve installed

Does Don't Starve Together work on a Mac without the original game? Yes. It's a standalone title. You don't need Don't Starve installed, owned or ever touched. The two games share a look and a world, but Together is its own app with its own saves and its own servers.

Can you play solo? You can, though it's built around having company. A solo world works fine, and some players prefer the extra challenge of managing everything alone with no one to revive them. The game doesn't lock any content behind multiplayer — it just feels lonelier.

Is local split-screen supported? Not on Mac. Split-screen exists on consoles but the desktop build is online or LAN only. If two people in the same house want to play, each needs their own machine and a copy of the game.

What about mods? The Steam Workshop is packed with them. You subscribe on the workshop page, then enable them from the in-game mods menu before starting a server. Most quality‑of‑life mods — like extra map icons or health bars — work fine on Mac. If you're playing with friends, everyone needs the same mods active.

Does it require a constant internet connection? For online play, yes. For a LAN game you can run it on a local network without a web connection. Set up a world, and anyone on the same router sees it in the server list under the LAN tab.

Questions from the bench

Is Don't Starve Together the same as Don't Starve?

No. It's a standalone multiplayer expansion, so you don't need the original game to play with others.
