You're the sort of player who likes a bit of chaos with your orders. Easy Red 2 suits the tactician who wants a whole platoon at their back and a map that stretches to the horizon, rather than a tight corridor shooter. It clicks with anyone who's ever wanted to jump from commanding a rifle squad to driving a tank in the same battle.

How a battle plays out

  1. Pick a front. You drop onto a large open map based on a historical location, with dozens of units already deployed and the fight in full swing.
  2. Lead your squad. You give movement and engagement orders while the simulation handles bullet physics and weapon characteristics. Your squadmates aren't just decoration — you need them to hold a line.
  3. React to the mess. A grenade takes out a sandbag wall. A tank shell rips through a fence. The cover you had thirty seconds ago is now a pile of rubble, so you shift position or push forward.
  4. Switch roles on the fly. Climb into a vehicle and you can jump between crew seats. One minute you're the hull gunner, the next you're commanding the tank and lining up the main gun.

This isn't a game for someone who wants a polished, scripted campaign with cutscenes. If you need a tight multiplayer meta or fast solo heroics, it'll feel loose around the edges. But if you enjoy the kind of sandbox where a battle unfolds differently each time because the AI, the destruction, and the sheer scale keep things unpredictable, it gets its hooks in deep. It's built to run at a stable, high frame rate even when the screen fills with smoke and infantry, so the spectacle rarely trips over itself.

Holding a crossroads with infantry and armour

A small crossroads with a knocked-out supply truck makes a good choke point. Start by parking a medium tank behind the wreck, hull-down, with the gunner sighted on the main approach road. Order two riflemen into the farmhouse on the left and keep your medic in the ditch beside the tank.

When enemy infantry push up, the tank's hull machine gun keeps them pinned while your rifle squad picks off anyone trying to flank through the orchard. If an enemy Panzer IV rumbles into view, switch to the gunner's seat and put a round through its turret ring before it traverses. Then climb out, grab the medic, and patch up the loader who caught shrapnel from the blast. The crossroads holds until you decide to push on.

When things go wobbly

A few snags crop up often enough to be worth knowing about.

Squadmates standing in the open during a bombardment. The default order radius is generous, and they sometimes stray from cover. Tighten up the formation with a quick defend-order tap on the piece of hard cover you want them behind. They'll hug it better.

Tank crew won't engage. If you're in the commander's seat and the gunner is staring at a target without firing, drop into the gunner position yourself for a second. It usually nudges the AI back into action. Sometimes the crew simply can't see what you can from the cupola.

Frame drops in heavy smoke. The game is well optimised, but five burning vehicles and an artillery strike can make any machine work. If you're on an older Intel Mac, drop the shadow quality one notch before you start a big push. You'll barely notice the difference, and the frames stay smooth when the explosions really kick off.
