iA Writer 8 runs on any Mac with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later. It’s a universal binary, so it works on Intel machines and Apple Silicon Macs without a hitch. Version 8.0.9 also brings a refreshed interface for folks on macOS 26 and above — older systems still get the clean, no-distraction editor, just without the latest chrome.

Publish to WordPress or export to DOCX from plain text

  • Drafting blog posts with built-in WordPress and Medium publishing.
  • Exporting clean documents straight to HTML, PDF, or Microsoft Word DOCX.
  • Focusing on a single sentence or paragraph — the app dims everything else.
  • Spotting filler: it highlights weak verbs, extra adjectives, and repeated nouns.
  • Quick navigation via the new Document Outline and Quick Search.

Requires macOS 26 and ditches the rich-text toolbar

  • The refreshed interface and compact Library layout need macOS 26 or later.
  • No rich-text toolbars — everything is Markdown, typed by hand.
  • Voice Control and Reduced Motion are supported, which helps if you rely on accessibility features.

Surfacing half-finished drafts across iCloud and Dropbox

Picture a travel blogger with three half-finished drafts, a messy Dropbox folder, and a pitch due by lunch. They open iA Writer and the Library pane shows everything in one place — local files, iCloud, the lot. A quick search pulls up the right draft without hunting through Finder windows. Fifteen minutes later the piece is shaped, the syntax highlighter has flagged four overused adjectives, and the post goes straight to WordPress. No copy-paste dance, no formatting surprises.

Snags people hit and how to sort them

The app won't open after install

macOS Gatekeeper sometimes blocks apps that didn't come through the App Store. Mount the disk image, right-click the app and choose Open, then confirm. If that doesn't cut it, run sudo spctl --master-disable in Terminal, launch the app once, then turn Gatekeeper back on. The drag-to-Applications step still matters — don't run it from the mounted image.

Export to DOCX looks odd in Word

The export engine produces a clean DOCX, but Word's default template can mangle the look. Open the exported file, head to Word's style pane, and tweak the Normal style. A quick fix: set your preferred font and line spacing there and save it as your default template. iA Writer's PDF export, by contrast, uses its own templates and tends to come out spot-on first try.

Focus Mode feels too severe

If dimming everything except one sentence throws you off, you can switch it to paragraph focus in the app's settings. Some writers find the sentence-level mode punishing; paragraph mode keeps a bit more context visible. Toggle it from the Command Palette — Cmd-Shift-P on a Mac.

Publishing to a static blog: start to finish

Plenty of folks use iA Writer to write posts destined for static site generators like Jekyll or Hugo. Here's one way that works well.

  1. Set your front matter. Start a new document and type YAML front matter at the very top — title, date, tags — between two sets of three dashes. iA Writer treats it as plain text, which is exactly what you want.
  2. Write the post in Markdown. Use the focus mode if your brain is scattered. The syntax highlighter will quietly underline weak verbs and repeated nouns as you type. Fix them as you go or leave it for a second pass.
  3. Check links and images. iA Writer's preview pane auto-formats inline links and images. Hit Cmd-R to toggle the preview and tap each link to make sure it points where you think it does.
  4. Export as HTML. Go to File → Export → HTML. The output is clean — no embedded styles, no junk spans. Drop that file into your site's _posts folder and your static generator will pick it up on the next build.
  5. Commit and push. Switch to your terminal, commit the new HTML file, push to your repo, and the site deploys. The whole chain from blank page to live post stays tidy because there's no rich-text cruft anywhere in the pipeline.

If you grabbed the ia writer mac download for this kind of workflow, you'll appreciate that the export never sneaks in inline styles you didn't ask for. The HTML is as bare as the writing environment.

Questions from the bench

Does iA Writer need a newer Mac for version 8?

No. It runs on macOS 10.15 and up, but the refreshed interface and compact Library layout only appear on macOS 26 or later.
