Komplete Kontrol 3.5.4 — Mac version
Beatmakers, sound designers and anyone with a sprawling collection of soft synths will find a friend in Komplete Kontrol. It's not a sound-maker itself — it's the librarian and remote control that sits between your plug-ins and your fingers, whether you're clicking a mouse or playing a keyboard controller.
All your sounds in one tagged browser
- One browser for instruments, effects, presets, loops and samples — all tagged through the NKS format so searching doesn't mean squinting at tiny DAW menus
- Native Kontrol Standard mapping that pre-wires supported instruments and effects to hardware controls, saving you from MIDI-learn drudgery
- Chord mode that lets you play full harmonies with one finger
- Standalone app or plug-in in any DAW — same interface either way
- Sounds.com sync for pulling in new sounds without leaving the browser
MacOS requirements
Version 3.5.4 runs on macOS 12 and later, on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. If you're on an older macOS, you'll need an earlier build — 3.5.1 or 3.5.3 are common fallbacks. The installer comes as a disk image: mount it and run the standard install. Once it's in place, your DAW should pick it up as a VST or AU plug-in next time you scan.
Rename presets with F2 before you drown in “Default” patches
A few shortcuts live one keystroke away and hardly anyone spots them. Tap F2 to rename a preset you've tweaked — proper names save you later when you're scanning through forty "Default" patches. Right-click any knob or slider and choose Assign to Macro to build quick performance controls without opening a mapping editor. And if you're dragging loops to your DAW timeline, hold Shift while you drag to drop the raw audio minus any applied effects or tempo-matching.
The browser's search box does more than match names. Typing bpm:120 filters loops at that tempo. type:pad digs out pad sounds across every installed instrument at once. These filters stack, so type:bass dirty narrows things down fast. On S-Series keyboards, the Light Guide isn't just eye candy — blue lights show scale notes, red marks the root, and unlit keys are off the map entirely. Handy when you're recording takes late at night and your theory brain has clocked off.
Point the content folder at your external drive first
Open Preferences before you do anything serious. First stop: the Library tab. Point the content folder at your external drive if your sound libraries live there — default paths assume everything's on your main disk. Next, under Plug-ins, hit Rescan and wait a few minutes. A fresh scan catches plug-ins you installed months ago that never showed up. While you're there, untick any plug-ins you never use. It keeps the browser lean and stops dead plug-ins from slowing the scan.
In the Audio tab, match the sample rate to what your DAW usually runs at. Mismatched rates cause clicks and pitch-shift surprises when you load standalone previews. And if your MIDI controller has touch strips or extra expression pads, check MIDI settings — Komplete Kontrol often defaults to a generic template that ignores half your hardware's controls until you tell it otherwise.
Blank plug-in window? Rescan to wake the graphics module
Most snags are small and fixable without reinstalling. If the plug-in opens but shows a blank window, quit your DAW, restart it and rescan plug-ins — the graphics module sometimes stalls on first launch after an update. On Intel Macs running macOS 12, a few users found the Kontrol S-Series MK2 level meters freeze in Logic Pro. Toggling the audio buffer size in your DAW's settings, then switching it back, usually jolts them awake.
If preset previews sound garbled, check that your audio interface and Komplete Kontrol share the same sample rate. A 48 kHz interface and a 44.1 kHz plug-in window will fight each other every time. And when a third-party NKS instrument refuses to load, delete its database file — you'll find it in ~/Documents/Native Instruments/Komplete Kontrol/ — and let the software rebuild it on next scan. Old cache files from version 3.5.1 or 3.5.3 sometimes confuse the 3.5.4 browser.
- NKS Connect support added — lets compatible controllers talk directly to the software
- NKS Mode integration for NKS Connect controllers
- Fixed sluggish response when tweaking plug-in parameters from Kontrol S-Series MK3 keyboards
- macOS 12 or later
- Intel or Apple Silicon Mac
