You open NotePlan to scribble a meeting agenda. Halfway through, you realise the third bullet point is an action for Thursday, so you tag it as a task and drag it into the afternoon. The note links itself to Thursday's daily page. You haven't left the keyboard once.

Time-block your day and link meeting notes bidirectionally

  • Time blocking your day right inside a plain-text editor.
  • Building a web of ideas with bidirectional linking between meeting notes, project pages, and daily logs.
  • Running everything from a command palette — search for a note, move a task, or jump to next week without touching the mouse.
  • Long-term planning with automatically generated weekly, monthly, and yearly notes.
  • Pulling upcoming tasks from across all your notes into one dynamic, sorted list.

No device sync in this build, and it needs macOS 14

  • Sync between devices is not functional in this build.
  • Uses plain Markdown, which gives you total control over formatting but no rich-text toolbar.
  • Needs macOS 14 or later, so older machines are left out.
  • Integrates with Apple Calendar and Reminders, not with Google or Outlook calendars.

Switch daily-note filenames to full dates for browsing outside the app

Out of the box, NotePlan uses plain filenames for your daily notes. Head to preferences and tick Use full date as title — you'll get "2025-03-15.md" instead of "15.md", which makes far more sense when you're browsing files outside the app or backing things up.

Next, switch on Show week numbers if you work in sprints or term cycles. The weekly note header then reads something like "Week 12 · 17–23 March", and suddenly planning a fortnight ahead feels less abstract.

Under Editor, bump the font size up one notch from the default. The Markdown syntax highlighting is easier on the eyes, and you'll spot a stray asterisk before it turns into a formatting mess halfway down the page.

Yesterday's unfinished tasks roll into today's note automatically

Picture a graphic designer juggling three client projects. They open Tuesday's daily note and see yesterday's unfinished tasks carried forward automatically — no copying, no nagging. A tagged #invoice task reminds them to chase a payment, and it's already linked to the client's project note where the rate and purchase order number live.

They block 9:30–11:00 for the logo revision by dragging a task onto the timeline strip. Apple Calendar shows the block in the menu bar, so the client's call doesn't clash. Mid-morning, a new brief lands by email. They hit the command palette, type "new note", link it to the project folder, and jot the requirements in Markdown — headings, a checklist, and a @due(Thursday) tag tucked into the second item. Nothing leaves the app, and nothing gets lost in a paper notebook.

Questions from the bench

Does NotePlan work with Apple Reminders?

Yes, and version 3.21.3 specifically improves the reliability of that connection, alongside the new Siri AI support.
