Writing a report shouldn't mean wrestling with formatting. When you want clean layouts, lists that behave, and the freedom to drop in a photo or a quick sketch, Pages stays out of your way. It's the word processor from Apple Creator Studio, sitting neatly alongside the Mac tools you already open every day.

What it plays nicely with

  • Pixelmator Pro — open an image straight from your document, edit it, and see the change appear
  • Photos and the Content Hub — swap in a picture without digging through folders
  • FaceTime and Messages — real-time collaboration means a colleague can add notes while you type
  • Your voice — drop in audio recordings and voice notes where words on the page aren't enough

What you're actually getting

Pages handles the grunt work of outlines, tables of contents and bibliographies with built-in styles, so the structure stays tidy even when you're moving chunks of text around. You can pull in video galleries, drawings made on the trackpad, and nested lists that don't fall apart when you reorder them. Version 15.3.1 also lets you generate a custom shape just by describing it — no fiddling with Bézier curves. It's a word processor that borrows good ideas from the rest of your Mac instead of pretending those apps don't exist.

Pages alongside Nisus Writer, Mellel and Word

If you've used Nisus Writer Pro for long-form drafting, you know its macro language and non-contiguous selection are brilliant for heavy editing — but it can't touch Pages for media handling. Dropping a video gallery or a quick sketch into Nisus feels clunky. Mellel goes the other way: superb for right-to-left scripts and academic cross-referencing, yet its interface hasn't budged in years. Pages sits in the middle — friendlier than Mellel, more visual than Nisus, and far lighter on its feet than Word when you just need a poster or a letter that looks finished without three trips through a ribbon toolbar.

How it holds up in daily work

Open a thirty-page report with embedded charts and a few voice notes and Pages 15.3.1 gets going in a blink — even on an older Intel Mac running macOS 15.6. Scroll through image-heavy sections and there's no beachball, no laggy rendering while the thumbnails catch up. Memory use stays modest: I've had it humming alongside a dozen Safari tabs and Pixelmator Pro without the fans spinning up. Collaborating live with a colleague feels snappy too — cursor movements appear in near real-time, and the document never locked up on me mid-edit. If you've been round the houses with other word processors that bog down under their own features, Pages on a Mac feels refreshingly lean.
