beauty box plugin for mac — editor view

Spending an hour cloning spots off a face is no way to spend a Tuesday. Beauty Box Photo does the tedious bit for you. It's a Photoshop plug-in that finds skin tones on its own, then smooths blemishes and wrinkles without you painting a mask by hand.

  • Automatic skin colour detection, so you're not fiddling with eyedroppers
  • Real-time rendering through CUDA and OpenGL for quick previews
  • Runs on ARM and x86 64-bit Macs
  • Straightforward English interface

You still control how much smoothing happens. The plug-in does the hunting, you set the strength. Good for batch work, headshots, or any photo where the face needs a tidy-up before you move on.

Skin detection is face-only, not for objects

Does it only work on faces? Skin detection is tuned for human skin, so yes — it's built for faces. It won't smooth out a leather sofa or a peach, but it handles a range of skin tones without you needing to sample anything first.

Will it make everyone look plastic? Not unless you push the sliders that far. The default settings aim for a natural look. You can dial things back to barely-there or go heavy for glamour work. The detail-keeping algorithm leaves eyes, eyebrows and hair sharp while it works on skin texture.

What happens if the auto-detection misses a patch? You can paint a quick mask over any area it skipped. It's rare on well-lit faces, but strong backlight or deeply shadowed skin can confuse the detection. A few brush strokes sorts it.

Is it a standalone app? No — it's a plug-in that lives inside Photoshop. You'll find it under the Filters menu once it's installed.

Beauty Box smooths broadly, Retouch4me heals spot by spot

Beauty Box vs Retouch4me Heal. Retouch4me runs as a standalone app or plug-in and uses AI to spot individual blemishes, then heals them one by one. It's more surgical. Beauty Box takes a broader approach — it smooths whole areas of skin rather than picking out single spots. For a quick overall tidy-up, Beauty Box is faster. For precise blemish removal on textured skin, Retouch4me gives you more control over each mark.

Beauty Box vs Portraiture. Imagenomic Portraiture is the old hand in this space. Both do automatic skin smoothing with mask generation. Portraiture has more presets out of the box and a slightly slicker preview panel. Beauty Box's real-time preview feels snappier on older Macs thanks to the CUDA and OpenGL support. If you already own Portraiture, the difference might not justify a switch. If you're starting fresh and want something lightweight that renders fast, Beauty Box earns its place.

Beauty Box vs manual frequency separation. Frequency separation costs nothing and gives you total control. It also takes forever. Beauty Box replaces the repetitive blur-and-heal dance for the 80% of jobs where you just need skin to look even. Save the manual method for hero shots that deserve the extra time.

Working through a headshot retouch

Here's a real workflow for a simple headshot — the kind you'd knock out before sending proofs to a client.

  1. Open your image in Photoshop and duplicate the layer. Always work on a copy so you can blend back the original if needed.
  2. Run Beauty Box from the Filters menu. The plug-in analyses the image and masks skin areas automatically. Give it a few seconds.
  3. Check the mask. Toggle the mask view on and off. If it missed a patch of forehead or neck, grab the add-to-mask brush and paint it in. If it grabbed some hair or clothing, switch to the subtract brush and tidy up.
  4. Set your smoothing strength. For a natural headshot, start around 30–40%. You want skin texture still visible — just less of the blotchiness and fine lines.
  5. Toggle the before/after preview. Flick between the original and the smoothed version. Check the eyes and mouth haven't softened. They should stay crisp.
  6. Apply and return to Photoshop. Lower the layer opacity to around 80% if the effect feels too strong. A touch of the original layer bleeding through keeps things believable.
  7. Spot-check any remaining blemishes. Beauty Box handles the overall skin, but a prominent mole or a stray hair across the face might still need the Spot Healing Brush. Two seconds and you're done.

That whole routine takes under three minutes once you're familiar with the plug-in. For batch headshots — school photos, corporate shoots, castings — you can record the steps as a Photoshop action and let Beauty Box chew through them while you make a cuppa.
