Intel Macs only, but Rosetta carries it on Apple Silicon

Feral Interactive brought this one to Intel Macs. If you're nursing an older machine along, that's good news — just check you've got the macOS version it needs. No Apple Silicon native build, but it runs fine through Rosetta on M-series kit.

Gliding, brawling, and detective work across an open Gotham

You spend most of your time gliding between rooftops, diving into street brawls, and working through detective puzzles. The city is properly open — far bigger than the asylum. One minute you're interrogating a thug, the next you're zipping up to a gargoyle to plan a silent takedown on a room full of armed goons. Between story missions you can chase down side objectives or just test your grapple boost across the skyline.

Brutal free-flow combat, stealth, and Catwoman’s acrobatic heists

  • Switching between brutal fist-fights and stealth sections whenever you like
  • Exploring a dense, weather-beaten Gotham that rewards poking into alleys
  • Huge variety from the Game of the Year bundle — Catwoman's quick, acrobatic missions feel completely different to Batman's heavy attacks

No native Apple Silicon code and mashing buttons gets you nowhere

  • Intel-only native code; Apple Silicon Macs rely on Rosetta
  • Combat flows beautifully once you learn the rhythm, but button-mashing won't get you far

Waiting for the counter icon instead of hammering the punch button

Button-mashing during combat is the big one. Arkham City rewards timing, not speed. Wait for the counter icon above an enemy's head — tapping punch three times means you've already missed it. The second mistake is ignoring quick-fire gadgets. The batarang and batclaw can be thrown mid-combo without breaking flow, but plenty of new players forget they exist for ten hours. Third: hoarding upgrade points. Spend them early on armour and combat moves. Gliding longer distances also matters more than it seems. Finally, don't skip Catwoman's episodes. Her whip and ceiling-crawling open up stealth routes Batman can't touch, and the story beats weave directly into the main plot.

A steady 30fps on a dual-core i5 with 8GB RAM

On an Intel Mac from the 2012-2015 era the game runs surprisingly steady. Frame rates hold up if you drop shadows and anti-aliasing a notch. I've seen it stay at 30fps on a dual-core i5 with 8GB RAM — not luxurious, but perfectly playable. Load times between districts are brief, rarely more than fifteen seconds. On Apple Silicon through Rosetta, you get a small hit at first launch while translation kicks in, then it smooths out. One thing: the game does not like being left paused for hours. The engine can start to stutter. A quick quit and relaunch fixes it. Memory use sits around 2.5GB in busy street scenes, so closing browsers and chat apps before playing is worth the effort.

A single patrol, start to finish

Say you want to clear a rooftop full of armed inmates without raising an alarm. You arrive by gliding in from the old GCPD building. First move: perch on a gargoyle and tap detective mode to tag everyone — three with guns, one with a jammer backpack. The jammer has to go first. Drop a smoke pellet at his feet, glide-kick him while he's blinded, then grapple straight back up before his mates turn around. Two left. Lay explosive gel on a weak wall panel near the second guard, detonate it as a distraction, then swoop down for an inverted takedown while he investigates the noise. The last one panics and starts firing at gargoyles. Wait until he empties a clip, then glide behind him for a silent finish. Roof cleared, nobody alerted, time to download the Arkham City torrent and keep exploring.
