The 1.0.2 release tidies up the full launch. Texture alignment, controller bindings and key prompts all got a fix, and there's now an option to switch off the screen flicker when you fire. Five episodes, 29 enemies, four bosses, five weapons and 39 player upgrades make up the package.

Will I like it if I'm after a story-driven cyberpunk world?

Partly. You play Lucy, an enhanced street samurai piecing together lost memories in Sunset City. A woman called Yuri offers a deal that pulls you deeper into a crime-ridden, plague-stricken setting, but the storytelling is light — atmosphere does more heavy lifting than dialogue.

What kind of combat does it favour?

Fast reflexes and unusual agility. Lucy moves more like a gymnast than a soldier, and the RPG upgrades let you push that further. It rewards aggressive, twitchy play over careful cover-shooting.

A run-jump-shoot loop that leaves story seekers cold

Anyone wanting a slow-burn immersive sim or deep RPG systems. The upgrades are meaningful but the core loop is run, jump, shoot, repeat. If you need a gripping plot to hold your attention, the music-only voice audio and thin narrative won't carry you.

More forgiving than Ghostrunner, easier to read

Ghostrunner is the obvious comparison — both lean on fast movement and one-hit-kill rhythms. Beyond Sunset feels less punishing. You can soak a few hits, back off, and rethink your approach. The pixel-art style also makes it easier to read enemy tells than Ghostrunner's neon blur.

Severed Steel shares the acrobatic gunplay but strips away any RPG layer. No upgrades, no hub, just a fluid dive-and-shoot loop. Beyond Sunset gives you a reason to poke around between fights — finding an upgrade tucked behind a vent feels more rewarding because it actually changes how you move or fight.

Turbo Overkill is pure excess — chainsaw legs, ridiculous speed, a kitchen-sink arsenal. Beyond Sunset is tighter and less exhausting. It asks for precision rather than chaos, so if you prefer landing a clean slide-shot over mowing down a corridor, it'll click faster.

Slide-cancel out of trouble with an untaught jump

A few quality-of-life touches are easy to overlook in the rush:

  • Slide cancelling — tap jump mid-slide to pop upright and keep your momentum. It's never explained, but it saves you from sliding into a group of enemies you'd rather meet standing.
  • Quick weapon switching works with number keys, not just the mouse wheel. Binding 1–3 to comfortable keys makes the difference between a clean clear and a messy reload screen.
  • Screen flicker toggle — tucked in the options menu. Turning it off helps enormously on older Macs where the flash effect can stutter or feel laggy, especially during shotgun blasts.
  • Controller remapping was fixed in 1.0.2. If you last played on an earlier build, it's worth resetting your bindings to default and re-tweaking — the old config can carry over broken prompts.

One thing the game never tells you: you can ledge-grab after a double jump. A few upgrade orbs sit just out of reach on purpose, and that extra bit of height opens them up without needing the air-dash upgrade first.
