Black Mesa 1.5.3.7336708 — Mac version
You need an Apple Silicon Mac
You need an Apple Silicon machine. That means any Mac with an M1, M2, M3 or M4 chip. Older Intel Macs aren't supported by the port, so if you're still on one of those, this one will stay out of reach.
Drag the app into Applications to install
- Mount the disk image you downloaded.
- Drag the Black Mesa app into the Applications folder alias inside the window.
- Wait for the copy to finish, then open it from Launchpad.
- If you hit a launch error, head back to the mounted image and run the Fix file. That sorts out the permissions that get snarled up.
Plug in a wired mouse for snap aim
This is a full keyboard-and-mouse shooter, so don't expect any clever trackpad gestures. Plug in a wired mouse if you want the same snap aim you remember from the original. On an M1 or better, you can push the settings up without many frame drops. The 1.5 update folded in fifteen years of graphical tweaks, so lighting and textures feel properly modern. The reworked Xen levels especially show off what the team pulled off on Apple Silicon — they run smoothly and look much better than the original's alien world ever did.
Your saves live inside the app bundle at Black Mesa.app/Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/KS Games/Black Mesa/bms/save if you ever need to dig them out or back them up.
Picture a player who only has an hour in the evening after the kids are in bed. They don't want cutscenes or open-world busywork — just a tight corridor shooter that respects their time. Black Mesa fits that slot perfectly. Each of the 19 chapters breaks the campaign into digestible chunks, so stopping after Blast Pit feels natural rather than like tearing yourself away mid-scene. The autosaves are generous too, which means you can close the lid without fuss and pick up exactly where you left off the next night.
Bind sprint and flashlight to one key
The flashlight and sprint are tied to separate keys by default, but you can bind both to the same button under the keyboard options — hold for sprint, tap for light. It frees up a finger for the weapon wheel.
In multiplayer, you can vote to skip maps by typing callvote nextmap in the console (tilde key). Handy when Bounce comes up twice in a row and the server regulars groan. The console also lets you set your field of view beyond the slider's limit with fov 100 if the default feels cramped on a laptop screen.
- Version 1.5 pulls together fifteen years of graphical and gameplay improvements into one package.
- Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later)
