This 2023 release packs three stories into one download: a full Unreal Engine 5 rebuild of the original Layers of Fear, the sequel, and a new linking tale called The Final Note. It's a first-person walk through the wreckage of an artist's mind — shifting rooms, locked doors, paintings that watch you back.

ARM-native on Apple Silicon only

  • Apple Silicon Macs only — it's an ARM-native build and won't open on Intel machines.
  • Ray tracing, HDR and 4K output are all in the settings if your display can handle them.
  • Thirteen interface languages, including English, Polish, Japanese and Turkish.

Drop the resolution scaling on an M1 Air

  • It's heavy on the GPU. On a MacBook Air (M1, 2020) running Sequoia, you'll want to lower the resolution scaling to keep things smooth.
  • No Intel support at all — if your Mac has one, it simply won't launch.
  • Controls are standard first-person mouse-and-keyboard. A controller works too, but the game doesn't tell you that up front.

Headphones on, lights off, graphics check first

I fire it up after dark, headphones on, lights off. First thing I do is check the graphics settings — on my M1 Air I drop resolution scaling to around 70% and leave HDR off. The game still looks moody and sharp enough, and the fans stay quieter than you'd expect.

  1. Settle into the hallway. The first few minutes are quiet. You learn to open doors slowly, because the house rearranges itself behind you.
  2. Follow the paint. The original story leads you room to room by half-finished canvases and scattered notes. I keep a notepad nearby for dates and names — the game won't hold your hand.
  3. Pause when it gets heavy. The shifting walls and whispered audio are proper tense. I play in forty-minute stretches, then step away. It works better that way.
  4. Switch stories from the menu. When I want a change of pace, I jump into Layers of Fear 2 or The Final Note without losing my place in the first game. Each keeps its own save.

One practical tip: if a door won't open, wait. Some rooms need you to look at a specific object — a mirror, a painting, a child's drawing — before the path changes. Backing out and re-entering rarely helps.

Suspends cleanly when you switch apps

Because it's built for Apple Silicon, the game respects the usual macOS niceties. It suspends cleanly when you switch apps, and Mission Control doesn't choke on it. I've had it running alongside Notes and a browser without trouble, though I close everything when a big scene kicks in.

  • Focus mode: turn it on before you start. Notifications yank you out of the atmosphere faster than any jumpscare.
  • Spaces: keep the game on its own desktop. Swiping back to it feels like stepping into the house again.
  • Screen recording: built-in macOS capture works if you want to clip a moment, but expect lower frame rates while recording on an M1.
  • Headphones: the game uses spatial audio cues. Any decent pair works — no extra software needed.

The English voice audio carries most of the story, so if you're learning another language from the interface list, you'll still hear the original performances while reading your chosen subtitles. That's a nice way to replay a chapter.
