Metro: Last Light Redux is the complete, remastered edition of 4A Games' underground shooter, gathering the base game and every bit of downloadable content in one place.

Two ways to survive the tunnels

You can play the whole thing twice and get a different feel each time. Survival mode pares things back — ammunition is scarce, reloads are slow, and every skirmish demands caution. Spartan mode hands you a more aggressive toolkit, closer to the original Last Light's pacing, with quicker reloads and plentiful supplies. Both modes include Ranger Mode, which strips away the heads-up display and makes combat even more punishing.

Roughly ten hours underground

The single-player story runs to about ten hours of play, not counting replays. It handles 60 frames per second on supported hardware, so older Intel Macs that meet the spec can keep things smooth. The interface speaks your language too, offering Russian, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Ukrainian, French and Czech.

Turn off motion blur before your first firefight

Before you even fire a shot, spend five minutes in the options. Turn off motion blur if the tunnels feel swimmy — it helps on older Intel Macs. Drop shadow detail one notch before you drop resolution; the 4A Engine leans hard on lighting and you lose atmosphere faster than you gain frames.

Night vision goggles eat batteries. You find chargers on dead bodies and in hidey-holes, but they're rare in the early chapters. Get comfortable switching them off between fights. The same discipline goes for your pneumatic weapons — pump them up whenever there's a quiet moment, not when you hear boots coming.

Listen for conversations. The game never tells you to stop and eavesdrop, but whole side stories play out in whispers between guards, mothers and children, and station traders. Some of the best writing in the game hides in these moments.

Secondary screen stays black by design

The game runs fullscreen and grabs the mouse, so Mission Control swipes won't bail you out mid-firefight. If you use a multi-monitor setup, the secondary screen goes black — this is normal behaviour for the 4A Engine on Mac. A quick Cmd-Tab drops you back to the desktop, but only when the game isn't loading a level.

Voice chat apps like Discord or FaceTime play nicely in the background, though the game's own audio mix is dense. Keep your chat volume high or Metro's clanking pipes and distant mutants will bury it. If you record gameplay with QuickTime Player, bump the in-game brightness a touch — the tunnels read much darker on replay than they felt while playing.

If the app won't open: right-click the icon and pick Open from the menu. The first launch triggers a Gatekeeper prompt on newer versions of macOS because the build isn't notarised. You only need to do this once.
